Assam Don Bosco University
On January 10, 2007, the General Council of the Don Bosco Society and the Rector Major granted their final consent to move forward with the university's establishment initiative. The proposal was finally presented on October 23, 2007, to the then-honorable Chief Minister of Assam, Shri Tarun Gogoi, along with members of his cabinet and other important government figures.
Following review by the government's Expert Committee, the Don Bosco Society's formal proposal to establish a private university was submitted to the Assamese government on November 8, 2007. Based on the Committee's recommendations, the government on March 29, 2008, granted the Don Bosco Salesians a Letter of Intent (LOI) to establish the University in Guwahati, Assam.
Thus, in the collective memory of all those who toiled diligently to see the concept take off, March 29, 2008, continues to be recognized as the University's Foundation Day.
Following the Letter of Intent, the State government issued an Ordinance on December 3, 2008 (The Assam Don Bosco University Ordinance, 2008, dated December 3, 2008). On December 6, 2008, the then-Assam Chief Minister, Shri Tarun Gogoi, formally opened the university. Ultimately, on January 9, 2009, the Assam Don Bosco University Act, 2009, an Act of the State Assembly, superseded the Ordinance. It was then published on February 12, 2009, in the Assam official gazette. During the 2009 visit to India by Don Bosco Society Rector Major Fr. Pascual Chavez, the university's foundation stone was blessed on November 10, 2009, at the Azara Campus.
The founding of the "Don Bosco College of Engineering and Technology," which was subsequently renamed the "School of Technology of the University," was the first project undertaken by Don Bosco University. The university took the brave decision to apply to the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to begin engineering courses in Azara, under the auspices of Assam Don Bosco University, confident that the process of establishing the university was well on.
