Directorate of Medical Education Assam
Directorate of Medical Education (DME), Assam is the regulatory body for medical education and practices in Assam. This was established in 1984 under the control of the Health & Family Welfare Department, Government of Assam.

Key Functions of the DME Assam- To promote expertise in medical science in different streams like Allopathic, Ayurvedic and Homoeopathic medicine and paramedical science.
- To promote health care facilities to the people of Assam through different hospitals under the Directorate.
- To develop and sustain the medical education through proper planning.
- To promote research in the field of medical science in the state of Assam.
- To develop human resources in medical science through different institutions under the Directorate.
- Administrative control of the Undergraduate, Post-graduate Degree/Diploma and Post Doctoral courses of various Health Educational Institutions under this Directorate.
- Administrative control over all the colleges and hospitals under it.
DME Assam Schemes
The Directorate of Medical Education (DME) Assam works on following schemes:
Centrally Sponsored Scheme- Establishment of Five New Medical Colleges attached with existing district/referral hospital at Diphu, Dhubri, Nagaon, North Laskhimpur and Kokrajhar.
- Strengthening and Up-gradation of State Govt. Medical College for starting new Post Graduate discipline and increasing Post Graduate seats" ( at AMC, Dibrugarh, GMC, Guwahati and SMC, Silchar)
- Upgradation of 200 Bedded Cancer Hospital, GMCH, Guwahati into State Cancer Institute (SCI) under the Scheme of National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer , Diabetes, Cardiovascular Disease & Stock(NPCDCS).
North East Council (NEC)- Support to Dev. of Additional facilities for specialization & Super Specialization in Medical Science at AMC, Dibrugarh, GMC, Guwahati and SMC, Silchar.
- Expansion of RDC, GUWAHATI.
- Expansion of RNC, GUWAHATI.
- Construction of Vertical extension of 1st floor(Part) 2nd floor of MDS building at RDC, Ghy.
- Strengthening of Orthopadic Department at GMCH, GHY.
State Owned Priority Development (SOPD-G)1. Compulsory Rural Posting after completion of MBBS course . After completion of MBBS course all the candidates have to do one year compulsory rural service or 5(five) years of state health service.
2. Resident Specialist Services by the Post PG Diploma/Degree candidates . All the PG degree/diploma candidates in Assam medical colleges after completion of their course shall work in Secondary and Tertiary care government hospitals of Assam for a period of one year.
Tertiary Health Care Services
A) Tertiary HealthCare services are offered through tertiary hospitals and teaching hospitals under this Directorate.
B) Medical Education to Under Graduates, Post Graduates and Super Speciality PGs through Medical Colleges
C) Organ transplantation approvals
D) Compulsory Rural posting after completion of MBBS course /Resident Specialist Services by the Post PG Diploma/Degree candidates.
E) NOC for passport & Permission to travel abroad
F) Grievance Redressel Mechanism.
