Universities in Assam

Assam is one of the north eastern states situated along the Brahmaputra river valleys. With Dispur as its capital, it shares its borders with Nagaland, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh and internationally with Bhutan and Bangladesh. Assam is renowned for its tea and silk. Assam has an impressive track record with education. As per the Census Report of 2011, its literacy rate is 73.18% with the urban areas showing a higher percentage at 88.88%, and the rural areas with 70.44%. Statistically, males and females have a discrepancy in their literacy rates, but still the urban females at 67.27% are much higher than the all India female literacy rate (65.46%). Every child in Assam is entitled to free and mandatory education till the age of 14 which is provided by the Government.

The state hosts some of the major institutes of the country like IIT, IIIT, TISS, National Law University, etc. The universities and institutes such as Gauhati University, Cotton University, Tezpur Central university, Guwahati Medical College and Hospital, Assam Medical College and Hospital, Assam Engineering College plays a major role in attracting students from around the country. India's foremost medical institute, viz. AIIMS is soon making its way to the state, which would further take the education scenario in Assam to its next level.

The Government of Assam established Kumar Bhaskar Varma Sanskrit & Ancient Studies University to cater to the education needs of the rural youth of Assam. Other than these there are numerous universities and institutes in the state providing higher education in agriculture, horticulture, law, medical, technology, Vedic, veterinary ayurvedic, homeopathy, etc. Gauhati University is the oldest of the universities in the state, established in 1946.
